Vacation mode: ON. But before you officially check out, take a few minutes to prep your home. No one wants to come back to a flooded basement, a fridge full of rotten food, or a surprise insurance claim.
Here’s your go-to pre-vacation home checklist to keep things safe, sound, and stress-free while you're away:
Home Safety Essentials
- Double-check all doors and windows, including the basement and garage.
- Don’t forget to secure sliding doors with a rod or security bar.
- If you have an alarm system or cameras, make sure they’re armed and working.
- Let your security company know you’ll be away (if applicable).
Water & Electricity Precautions
- Shut off your home’s main water valve to prevent leaks or burst pipes.
- Unplug your appliances: Hair tools (straighteners, curling irons, etc.), coffee maker, toaster, blender, TV. Basically, anything that doesn’t need to stay on while you’re away
Make It Look Like You’re Home
- Program a few lights to turn on in the evening and off at bedtime.
- Put a hold on mail delivery or ask a neighbour to bring it in.
Arrange for a Check-In
- Ask a friend, neighbour, or family member to do a quick walk-through.
- Have them check the basement for any signs of water, especially if you're away for more than a week.
- Bonus: they can water your plants and make sure everything’s running smoothly
Fridge & Thermostat Check
- Empty the fridge & toss anything that might spoil (milk, meat, leftovers).
- Take out the trash so you don’t come home to mystery smells.
And you’re good to go! Take a deep breath, grab your sunglasses, and enjoy your well-earned time away. Your home is safe, and your insurance provider will appreciate the extra precautions too.
Happy vacationing! ☀️🌴
